A trojan mangled my XP (Firewall disabled etc.) and I tried to
reinstall XP, but by mistake I installed a copy of it in another
harddisk partition. Now I want to remove it. I deleted the new copy but
the menu appears while booting asking to choose from one. What should I
do to remove it from there?
If I want to reinstall Windows without formatting or losing programmes
installed, which installation option should I choose? Upgrade or new
copy?
Thanks in advance,

The OP again,
Is there a way to reinstate the firewall without reinstalling the XP?

try removing it from the boot.ini tab in msconfig Click on 'check all boot
paths, and delete the one you don't want.
If you want to preserve your file, then a reinstall or upgrade is the only
way..if by 'new copy' you mean a 'clean install'

Not sure what you are asking about reinstating the firewall. I'd ditch the
xp firewall and get the free version of Zone Alarm, but that is purely a
personal choice..however, are you saying your current firewall, (and I
guess I'm assuming you are using the xp firewall) is not working?
You did get rid of the trojan, and are sure your system is clean?

Should be.

Open Control Panel - Security and click on the Recommendations button
in the Firewall section of the window. In the Recommendations window
there will be an "Enable now" button which will turn the firewall back
on again.

If that does not work then please post a further response back here
describing the results, including the complete text of any error
message that resulted when you clicked the "Enable now" button.

Good luck
