I somehow ended up with two copies of several images, each at different
resolutions. Both choices have the same name in the Wallpaper choice list.
I want to remove the one with the resolution which doesn't match my screen
but I've been unsuccessful at finding where or how these choices are stored
or how to remove some of them. Does anybody know how?

Use Windows search (the wallpaper name is the same as the file name, usually
a .jpg file) to find the files, rename one of the duplicates, test it using
the control panel/Display Properties/Desktop preview.

Windows XP fetches the image files from the following paths:

BMP Files from C:\WINDOWS

BMP, JPG, GIF, JPE, DIB, PNG, HTM files from the following locations:

C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\My Documents\My Pictures [& ALL THE
SUB-FOLDERS]
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer
C:\Program Files\Plus!\Themes [*** & ALL THE SUB-FOLDERS ***]

Look through these folders for the images and move them elsewhere.

Do they have the same name but different file extensions?

I.e. .jpg and .bmp?

Any .jpg you set as background (wallpaper) Windows changes the file to a
..bmp.

The only reason I can figure is that .bmp files take more space. ;-)

Bliss.bmp 1.37 MB (1,440,054 bytes)
Bliss.JPG 50.1 KB (51,344 bytes)

See Rock's post for locations. Or do a Search for the names.
