removing USB drive

I do not get an icon on the task bar to remove / close the USB like I do on
other computers running XP. (I have XP home with SP2 + other updates).

Is it OK to just pull it out, or how do I find the item that allows me to
safely remove the USB drive.

Thanks,

What are you trying to do? USB ports stay open constantly, thus connecting a
USB device it will activate. To deactivate a USB drive, remove the device.
If
you have a USB hub attached, it may have a disconnect switch or just unplug
it.
To actually disable a USB port, you can go here:
Rightclick My Computer>Properties>Hardware tab>Device Manager
Scroll to the last item - Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Click the Plus (+) sign and then right click the USB port and click Disable.

Right click on Taskbar, select Properties, Taskbar tab. Under Motivation
{bottom} click on customize. From the list find and select Safety Remove
Hardware. Under Behavior you will find the behavior you have selected
{perhaps always hide}. From the drop down list select behavior you desire.

Thanks all for the directions - works fine..! I like the idea of
deactivating the USB flashdrive before just yanking it out of the PC.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to activate the 'Safely Remove Hardware' action?
Or a way to select it from the Start menu/programs? I find it tedious to
hunt for the icon on my task bar. Thanks.
