How can I remove an unwanted icon in my control panel? I
have since removed an app in my hdd but the icon still
sits in my control panel. There is no link to it
anymore.

When it worked what did it look like. Like Display, or like Fonts, or like
User Accounts (which are the three main types).

What was it's name.

TweakUI has a control panel area with a list of cpl files that can
designated as shown or removed.

McAfee VirusScan.

In addition: Go to Start/Search and type in: *.cpl or go to
Start/Run/Regedit and delete it from here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace

It's been 5 or so years since I last saw this program. But it probably put a
file in c:\windows\system32 called <something>.cpl. If in doubt double click
each one until you see it. The names in Control Panel and the names in
system32 can be completely different. Right clicking it and choosing
Propertries should have version info and mfg name.
