Removing Statistics

Is there any way to remove the document property statistics (number
of revisions, etc.) from a Word 2002 document? The "remove personal
info" option does not do it.

There is an add-in to remove hidden data (including document properties, I
believe) at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=144E54ED-D43E-42CA-
BC7B-5446D34E5360&displaylang=en. Note that this add-in will dirty
Normal.dot, so it's far from ready for prime time, but it was written by MS
developers. Here's a description:

It operates as an add-in for Office XP and Office 2003 (specifically, for
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). The add-in will only install on systems that
have either Office XP or Office 2003 installed. However, since the file
formats haven't changed in quite a while, the add-in will handle docs
created by Office 97 and Office 2000.

Windows XP is the supported operating system, but it should also work on
Windows 2000. Testing was only performed on Windows XP, but there are no
known problems on Windows 2000. Installation is blocked on Windows 95,
Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows NT 4.0.

Remove Hidden Data is an add-in for Microsoft Office 2003 Editions or
Microsoft Office XP that lets users permanently remove hidden data and
collaboration data from their Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft
PowerPoint® files.

This addin installs to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Remove Hidden Data
Tool and is a COM addin called "RemoveHiddenData."

The addin has a batch mode that can be used to perform the operation on a
collection of files, and the results of the addin are logged in a log file
that the customer can review.

Suzanne, you're a font of Word-Wisdom. What more can you tell me
about the consequences to <normal.dot>? The web site didn't address
it.

I have downloaded and installed the "Remove Hidden Data" add-in, and am very unhappy with it. I have Win XP +Office XP SP2. The add-in seemed to install properly and appeared in the Office apps. However, everytime I would exit from Word, I received the message that Normal.dot had been changed, and asked if I wanted to save the changes. Whether I clicked Yes or No, I would receive the same message each time I exited from Word

I then uninstalled the add-in, using Control Panel. It duly disappeared from all the apps except Word. The Normal.dot message has gone away. However, "Remove Hidden Data..." still appears in the Word File menu. Uninstalling and reinstalling Word doesn't help The File menu entry appears to do no harm, but I would like to get rid of it. How to do this? Will Office XP SP3 enable the add-in to function properly if I reinstall it

Please help.

It sounds like you have the Add-In successfully uninstalled - as much as the
uninstaller can do it. The problem is with the Add-In so installing the
latest SP won't help with it.

You can remove the unneeded menu item using Tools => Customize...

With that dialog displayed click on the menu command on the File menu and
drag it into your document (off the menu). It will disappear. Close the
dialog box. Close Word. This time, when asked if you want to save changes to
normal.dot, answer "Yes."

At some time, Microsoft may offer a good version of this Add-In, but it
isn't out yet.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen, then click on the menu entry to remove it.

Help! I followed Charles Kenyon's suggestion to Tools/Customize, then drag the File menu off the menu bar onto the document. Now the File menu is gone. How do I get it back???

View>Toolsbars>Customize>Commands Tab. Select built in menus in the
categories window, drag and drop File from the commands window on your menu
bar.

OK, I did it. Go to Tools/Customize, then Toolbars, select Menu Bar, select Reset. This will bring File back to the menu bar, without the offending Remove Hidden Data entry.

I doubt that Charles told you to drag the File menu off the menu bar. I
imagine he told you to drag the Remove Hidden Data command off the File
menu.

I was not able to drag the specific command off the File menu--the only entity that would move off the Menu Bar was the entire File menu. Is there a technique I missed? Separately, when I right-ckicked on the File menu I got a Reset option. Would this have accomplished the task also? Fortunately, there are at least the two techniques that I and Greg Maxey identified above that work

That "Remove Hidden Data" download from Microsoft was inexcusably incompetent. I had (previously) thought that these items were tested and debugged before posting.

When Tools | Customize is open, you can click to open the File menu, then
select a specific item and drag it off the menu (into the Word window) and
drop it. Alternatively, you can (without using Customize) press
Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen, then click to open the File menu, and click on the unwanted
item to vaporize it.

Thank you for your tips. So now there are at least 5 ways to delete a menu subitem: the 2 Customize dialog Resets identified earlier by me and Greg Maxey; with Customize open, the click & drag; with Customize open, the right-click & Reset (I tried this & it works); and with Customize not open, Ctrl+Alt+- & drag. Your help has made my intitial post worthwhile, although I remain disappointed in the original RHD download
