Hi,

I have Windows XP home edition. When I startup my PC 'two windows explorer
in specific directories' and 'one media player' application start
automatically. I don't remember adding this option ever but some how I have
started to get them.
I have checked that there is nothing related to this 'startup' directory of
my own user account, default user and all users.

Does anyone have clue of where these instructions could be hiding.

thanks in advance
Parik

they are 'hiding' in the registry. There are about 15 places in the
registry which auto-start apps. I use a very small program called
"Auto-Starts" that shows me what is being loaded at startup....I can then
jump right to it (from the 'jump to it' button on the program) in the
registry editor and delete it . if you use Start/Run/MSConfig/Start up
Programs to disble it xp will nag you on every boot that you've made changes
etc.(of course, this can be disabled) The Auto-Starts program is very
smalll, I could send it to you if you like....jim

Hi Parik,

On the one for Windows Media Player, this is caused by spyware called
iedll.exe, a BHO (browser helper objet). Read up on it and how to remove it:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/darnit_2.htm#iedll
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#startup

On the explorer Windows, what directories are they opened to? Please see:

System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=170086

Also, start/run msconfig, and see if there is a line that loads /L:ENG. It
comes from a SoundBlaster Audigy driver, and it can cause this problem as
well. If it exists, use the registry fix from MVP Kelly:

Line 260 on the right:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

It's far easier than mucking about in the registry. The problem can also be
caused by other incorrectly built registry strings. So, if the first two
steps don't help you, could you please export and post the contents of these
keys in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

To do this, start/run regedit, expand the branches to each key (do this one
at a time). Click on the key, then on file/export. Give it any name, then
save to the desktop. Once you have saved both keys, close the registry
editor. Right-click one of the saved files on the desktop, choose edit, it
should open in notepad. Click edit/select all/edit/copy. Open a response to
this post and click in the message text area. Hit ctrl+v to paste the
contents. Repeat for the other saved key, then send the post for
examination.

Hi Parik,

Hi Carry,

The tips from Rick have already solved 2 out of 3 problems. But it would be
nice to have you 'auto-starts' utility also. Can you send it to my e-mail
account (e-mail address removed)

thanks
Parik

I would also like a copy of the "Auto-Starts" program. Would you please send
me a copy to (e-mail address removed)

Thanks

Bad move...

You posted your email in a usenet group...NEVER, EVER post your email
address!!!

Prepare to be barraged by spammers, hackers and script kiddies.

You might as well cancel that email addy now before your ISP does it for
you.
