An unwanted program called xupiter is loaded on my
computer somwhere. I want to remove it. It does not
appear in the Add / remove programs feature for xp
professional. I searched the internet for xupiter and saw
several sites that offered help, but i was suspicious of
these sites. I was worried these sites would be traps for
people trying to remove an invasive program by loading
more unwanted stuff. what should I do to find and remove
this very annoying and invasive progam?

I highly recommend SpyBot Search & Destroy
www.security.kolla.de too. I just helped a lady who lives
across the street from me clean up her computer this
afternoon. I downloaded SpyBot and ran the program. It
found 384 files on her computer, everything from dialers and
keyloggers to just plain adware.

SpyBot has an immunize feature which will block
re-infection. AdAware from www.lavasoftuse.com
is also very good but you have to pay for the Pro version to
get an active blocker.

I run both on my computer.

She also did not have the ICF turned on and she is on DSL.
I turned that ON and then downloaded the free version of
Zone Alarm.

I'll have to ask her next week if her computer runs faster.

Go to Google Search and type in Adaware. You can download
adaware and it will get rid of alot of spyware. You can
also enter spyware under Google Search and find a program
called Spy Sweeper. You down load the program and it
creates a short cut on your desk top. Click the short cut
and the click the "begin Sweep" button. You can also use
it to block cookies and shield your homr page and memory.

I see that other posters gave advise on spyware programs,
your other comment about being cautious of help from web
sites is also good, if you need help removing spyware go
to www.spywareinfo.com these people are experts on
spyware and can be trusted.

Xupiter Uninstaller
http://www.xupiter.com/uninstall.html

To deal with any sort of "adware" and/or "spyware,"such as Gator,
Comet Cursors, Xupiter, Bonzai Buddy, or KaZaA, and their remnants,
that you've deliberately (but without understanding the consequences)
installed, two products that are quite effective (at finding and
removing this type of scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and
SpyBot Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de/. Both have
free evaluation versions. It's even possible to use SpyBot Search &
Destroy to "immunize" your system against most future intrusions. I
use both and generally perform manual scans every week or so to clean
out cookies, etc.
