Hi
I've just installed my Windows XP pro OS on my new
machine and after that I installed the hard drive from my
old machine as a secondary device and copies lots of
folders over to my new hard drive. The problem I have is
that I can't remove the read only attribute from these
copied folders - I have disabled simple file sharing and
thought (through the security tab and ownership
assignment tab) that I'd assigned ownership of everything
on the disk to administrator. I can remove the read only
attribute and hit apply. If I then close the folder down
and check its properties a second time, the read only
attribute is back! Please help because I can't make
outlook express use all my exisitng mail information as
this is contained in one of the copied folders. Also, I
have now formatted the old drive on the assumption that
the copy would work. Any help would be appreciated and
thanks in advance for any responses.

This article describes how to take ownership of a file or folder
to which you have been denied access:

Peter;
If it's for a folder and the Read-only check box is Gray,
it doesn't mean anything.

Hi Wes

no, the box is definitely green and if I remove it and
apply it looks to fix it but the next time you open it
the box is green again. Thanks for your help.
