Removing programs that load during startup

I want to prevent mcafee virus scanner and spamkiller from loading at startup
while I try a set of security programs provided by F secure through my ISP.

I do not want to delete these programs from add / remove programs. When I
use msconfig and remove the programs check mark in startup and reboot the
machine I get a message that says the computer has restarted in diagnostic
mode as opposed to normal mode. Is this normal? When I am in msconfig and
remove the program in startup and then go back to the general tab the
computer shows diagonstic mode, if I click normal and go back to startup the
check reappears beside the program that I deleted. I am not at all sure if
this is normal.

Is msconfig the only way to remove programs that load at startup?

Thanks in advance

Yes, it is normal for msconfig to act as you describe. To stop McAfee Virus
Scanner from starting at start up, open McAfee and choose options. The 1st
line states Start Active Shield with Windows (at least in my version of
McAfee). Just uncheck this box, and reboot. That should stop you virus
scanner from opening. Depends on your Spam program, but it should have
basically the same procedure as the virus scanner. The only other way I know
to stop programs loading at start up, would be to do a Registry modification,
and I do not have the knowledge to explain the steps.

That's normal behavior to get that advisement message of diagnostic mode
when you have unchecked some programs.
