removing programs from startup

I have been trying to figure out how to change program
settings so they do not open up automatically when I turn
on my computer. Every search I have done about startup
just refers to the Icons on my taskbar or desktop. I
cannot not find anywhere I can stop a program from
automatically loading and opening up when I log onto the
computer I use windows XP

Click Start > Run and type ´msconfig´. Then press Enter.
Select the last tab and deselect all programs you don´t want to start
automatically
