A 'friend' installed his copy of Windows XP onto my Windows 98 computer. My
computer now isn't working like it should. I'd like to buy a valid copy of
XP for myself and reinstall it properly.
Is this possible without wiping out all my data? Will I need to backup my
80GB of data (photos mostly) and reinstall all my programs?
I suspect that your "friend" did an upgrade from Win98 to WinXP.
You could re-install WinXP over the top of this upgrade installation.
This would preserve your data but AFAIK, it would also preserve
the licence number he used.
Your question about your data suggests that you choose to believe
that once a file is saved, it remains saved forever. It is a belief that
is not supported by hard facts. Many people adhere to it until they
face a major disaster. A more rational approach is to save all
important files to an independent medium once every week, e.g.
a hard disk in a USB case. Disks are cheap!
If this was my machine then I would do this:
- Back up everything.
- Start a WinXP installation
- Allow the disk to be formatted
- Complete the WinXP installation
- Re-install all applications
You will get a far more stable and robust installation than
what you get with an upgrade from an outdated and inferior
operating system.
