Removing old DCs

I promoted two new W2K Servers into domain controllers.
Can I now just remove the old DCs from the network?
 
Yes, if you have transferred all FSMO roles and any other services you might
need and have on the old ones. Use dcpromo to demote them to member servers
before removing them from AD.

Should I backup AD before I undertake that risky operation (demotion)?
If yes, what's the best way to do it?
 
Well, it's always good to have backup. But I don't think that demotion is
risky.
