Removing Mistaken Dual-Boot Option

I did a complete disk re-partition, format and reinstall of XP Home.
For some completely unfathomable reason, the boot.ini is showing
listings for "Partition 1" and "Partition 2," so the system thinks
there are two XP Home installations and offers that choice at boot up.
Of course, there is only one.

I see various posts saying that boot.ini can be edited to delete the
extar boot sequence. I just want to be sure to delete the right line.
When I boot, I get options to (supposedly) load one of two identical
XP Home versions. The first line (highest on the screen) is correct,
and the second line is unbootable.

Are those lines in the same order as the lines in the boot.ini? If I
delete the second boot line in boot.ini will that correspond to the
second (nonexistent) boot option presented when I boot up?

Thanks.

First try running the System Configuration Utility.
Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

Look on the boot.ini tab and click the button that says "Check all boot
paths". The system should find that you only have one install and offer
to fix the boot.ini entry for you. Go ahead.

My post was delayed for some reason, and I figured out which line was
bad, but your advice is the more elegant way to check that item, and
I'll remember that for the future.

Thanks.
