I've just installed messenger 6.1 but the version 4.7
still working.
Anytime I start a new logon the version 4.7 makes the
automatic logon.
I tried to remove the version 4.7 using the Add or
Remover Programs option on Control Panel. But, although
the option is not select, the version 4.7 still there.
Any tip?

Same thing happened to me even though I uninstalled it.

To uninstall it go to control panel, add/remove programs,
on the left hand side click on Add/Remove Windows
Components and when the window comes up go to the bottom
and deselect Microsoft Messenger and click OK.

P.S.: This is what I did, but every now and again it
still comes up. Some people tell me it is because in
Outlook I have Microsoft Messenger as an option and in
Symantec AntiVirus I have Messenger as an option as well.

Let me know if you find a solution.

Microsoft if you are listening how about forcing and
uninstall before someone can install 6.1 OR better yet
how about Upgrading. Going from 4.7 to 6.1 is a pain and
even after you uninstall 4.7 it still loads on it's own
sometimes.

Poor programming !

I just found this on Deja.com:

Greetings Sean,

"Uninstalling" it from Add/Remove Windows Components
doesn't actually uninstall it -- it
simply removes the shortcuts and hides the files.

To truly disable Windows Messenger, open it up (click
Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and
click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and
unchecking 'Run this Program when
Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows
starts' (depending on version). This
won't remove Windows Messenger completely, but it will
let it stay out of your way.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent
versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can
conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus
(Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock),
choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN
Instant Messenger and click OK.

Hi,

To Prevent Windows Messenger from Running on a Windows XP-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302089&Product=WinMsgr

When you do this your Windows Messenger won't show up in your taskbar
anymore

However if you want to completely remove/uninstall Windows Messenger from
Windows XP can be found at this website made by Jonathan Kay.
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/problem.aspx?ID=7

Follow the steps and the pictures that the website has and you shouldn't
have anymore problems. Uninstalling Windows Messenger can disable some of
the messenger features such as Whiteboard Sharing, and others on MSN
Messenger if you're using that.
