Removing links in Excel 2000

I have some links (to an external spreadsheet) in an Excel
spreadsheet that cannot be removed by the Microsoft link
breaking tool or manually. There are no cells that refer
to these links and the variables that show up as linked in
the link breaking tool do not reference an external
spreadsheet. Any ideas on how to remove this corruption?
