I have a number of items on my task bar that are redundant and I no longer
use. They are clogging up my computer, and seriously increasing boot-up time.
How do I get rid of them?

you mean programs that start up and run on boot?
find the prog in add/remove programs in the control panel and remove them

or / and

go to the "run" prompt in the start menu and type "msconfig" without the "
go to the startup tab at the top and see if you can see any of the
offending programs listed. If you can untick the relevant boxes and apply
it. That will stop them from starting up.

or/and

Find out what the program is and search for its location using windows
search/find and remove it manually if it is a standalone exe or similar or
run the uninstaller if it isn't and it hasn't one.
Check your "all programs" on the start menu for a folder called "startup"
and see if any are listed there. If they are delete them.

ps,
if you use the msconfig thing it will only stop the program starting up and
not remove it completely which is good if you still want to use the program
eventually. note Sometimes when you use a program it sets itself to startup
again so you might have to redo the process.

MasterYourWindows can also (de)activate auto-start-entries,
or really delete these entries. This tools also continuously
checks your system for (new) start-up-entries,
besides this tool offers features like auto-maximize applications,
auto-close windows, open/save-dialog-box-settings.
