I have tried to remove a duplicate personal folder in Outlook 2003 to no avail.

1) I have changed the email delivery from one personal folder to another
2) Close "personal folders" is always greyed out even after changing email
delivery location.
3) In folder properties, pressing the advanced button gives me an error "The
operation failed, an object could not be found"

One way that will always work is to create a new mail profile in Control
Panel>Mail

Brian,

thanks for your reply,

This works fine - the only downside is that in creating a new profile I
don't have any of my emails or contacts, palm synching or any of the rules
that I set up....So a lot of work to recreate.....

Any suggestions as to "import" rules, contacts, email settings etc?

Many thanks,

R.

Hi,

you have to open your *.pst files into Outlook
Open Outlook FILE | OPEN | DATAFILE and point to your pst file
default C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook
Its an hidden folder, so please be sure, that you have activate the option,
show hidden files and folder in the Folderoptions

I have now imported all the email and folders from my old pst file (via the
import facility) - without ending up with a duplicate - so that's a result.

What I don't appear to have is;
1) My email accounts
2) My rules
3) a particular custom contact form....which I know is there - I just can't
get the new install to see....which is actually the biggest nightmare as the
default contact form does not display the information that was imput into the
custom form

Many thanks for all your help to all.

Not at all. Just point your new profile at your old PST. Control
Panel>Mail>Show Profiles. Select your profile, click Properties>Data Files.

No, no, no. Do not import PSTs. You lose data when you do. Open them with
File>Open>Outlook Data File.

oooooops...

well...I am totally confused now...the whole point of this excersise as far
as I was concerned was to reduce the size of the pst file and thus increase
the speed of Outlook. Unfortuantely quite the opposit has happened....The
file has now grown to twice the size.....hmmmm.

Does opening the data file me that I have to manually copy stuff across?
It's not too much of a problem - I'll just copy folders - but am I still
stuck with having to redo all the rules and email accounts....

Lordy, why is nothing simple in life....do a job, make a job (and some 4hrs
later)

Thanks for sticking with me on this one Brian.

Ok, so have done as you instructed....which seems to work fine...

I am still missing my rules and email accounts though...anyway to recover
those?

The rules are also kept in the PST (in a hidden folder, I've read). So, if
you've copied a working PST from another machine (not one that has been
built by an export, but the one the other machine was using as its delivery
location), you should be able to select that PST as the delivery location on
the new machine. You may have to reenable the rules, but they should be
there.

The account information, alas, is kept in the registry and not in the PST,
so you'll have to recreate the accounts.

If all else fails, use the Rules wizard on the other machine to export the
rules and import them on the second machine. The accounts have to be
recreated, since they're in the registry on the old machine.

Thanks Brian,

this is what I did...I exported rules from one profile to another. I still
had to reset them in the new profile, but much less work than recreating them

Thanks again for all your help,

Richard.
