Removing automatic accent over letter "i"

Word has decided to automatically place an accent over the letter "i" when
typed in a word like "Benefits" instead of a dot. I have checked all settings
to make sure the keyboard language is selected as English. Any suggestions
how to correct this infuriating problem would be much appreciated! I'm using
Word 2003.

What font are you using?

I'm using Times New Roman.

Well, a weird font is not the answer then. I can't imagine what it could be.
I assume you've tested to see that this accented i actually prints and is
not just a screen artifact?
