I have had a domain controller that had no roles on it except as a Global Catalog Server. The server died. The server was removed from Sites and Services/Users and Computers, ADSI edit was used to clean its reference out as was ntdsutil. It does not show up in DNS anymore, but I am seeing the following error in the my ADchedk util: The DSA Operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup Failure (For diagnostic purposes, the error number is=8524). The Event ID error I see in Directory Service, Event id 1085 Category, Replication, same error: The DSA Operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup Failure Any help would be great!

Hello Paul,

En sure the steps are taken in the KB Below.

HOW TO: Remove Data in Active Directory After an Unsuccessful Domain
Controller Demotion

As well ensure DNS works correct, it seems to be the issue here, You have to
be available to resolve the FQDN of the domain name. TCP/IP DNS must point
to the server running Active Directory DNS Zone. Active Directory are depend
on DNS.
