remove xp

I partitioned my hard drive so that I could retain XP until I'd had a chance
to make sure any and everything I wanted worked with Vista. Now, having
done that, I'm thinking of the fatal flaw of my plan...to remove XP and the
added partitions, is there anything I can do without a complete fresh start?

If it helps, my system is an HP so the original setup was the standard C
drive with a smallish D drive for recovery purposes. So, when I
partitioned, I--roughly--halved the C so that C is still XP and the new G is
the Vista installation. I don't know how the Vista installation went about
placing the dual boot information.

Is there any chance that it's as simple as: start my Acronis Disk Director
and remove the C and D partitions and the former G will automatically
become C and Vista will work?

Obviously I can just remove everything and start fresh but I hate the
thought of having to go through a complete installation and setup if I don't
absolutely have to.

Thanks

Vista put boot stuff in the XP partition, so you'll need to repair Vista
after you zap the XP and HP restore partitions. You might as well try
it, since you're considering a reinstallation - boot the DVD and
repair Vista's startup - look for that option after country, etc.

I haven't tried it because I don't need to do it but VISTABOOTPro that
I installed before installing VISTA so I wouldn't have to struggle with
BCEDIT to change default boot etc in the boot up menu apparently has a
command that I presume does the necessary change to boot files for you
and then allows you just to delete the unwanted system.

Check out their website since it would be nice if it did the repair and
left the system ready just to be a single OS one.

Here's a thread in their forum about the specific topic of removing XP
from a dual boot with VISTA:

but I think there's definitely something in VISTABOOTPro for removing
an OS.

Belive me when I tell you, the best way to go is a clean windows vista
install. It does not take too much of your time. The only problem I see is
that many manucfacturers of hardware have not yet published their new
drivers, but they're getting there. I solved few of the compatibility issues
by downloading new wVista drivers, however, by running windows compatibilties
for vista you'll know what issues you'll have left. You can either wait for
your new drivers ,buy new hardware or wait for SP2.
If your main worry is your files, back up and reinstall them as soon as you
have windows vista running.
I bet partininoning took you a good formatting and installation of 2 OPs XP
and Vista.
Removing XP means reformatting again or do an unistall of XP if possible.
Your best bet is having only one partion with vista and forget about XP. Once
you cruize with vista you definetly forget about XP.

Sincerely,
BL
