I started installing XP pro on my computer but since it only gave me the option to over write my current OS i quit the installation. now every time i reboot i am prompted to continue setup

How can i fix this

Apparently you acquired an "OEM Version" of Windows XP Professional.
OEM versions cannot upgrade an existing Windows installation. Only
"retail versions" can upgrade. Either purchase a retail version of XP Pro
or reformat your drive to install the OEM version "clean".

Get rid of the menu selection by editing your boot.ini file and deleting
that reference.

You need to find and amend 'boot.ini'
There will be a refrence to the new OS in there.

I did a search for boot.ini and in Windows dir., I found two copies of boot.ini.backup, but did not find a boot.ini anywhere. In Winnt directory, I found nothing. Where or how does boot.ini hide

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Thanks Carey Frisch. Your solution worked perfectly. I used the My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Edit method. I no longer have that nitnoy decision to make. Boots much faster. Thanks.

Now that I got rid of the prompt to choose xp home or xp pro, can I safely delete the WINNT directory? My programs all seem to be in the WINDOWS directory.
