Remove WPA from SP2

I recently had a frustrating time upgrading a Toshiba Satellite 2715 to SP2
which prevented me from using WiFi in an open network.

I think hotfix Q815485 requires WPA. But it seems that that is built into
SP2.

Is there a way to disable mandatory WPA in SP2?

If I "install" Q815485, can I "unistall" it and get WPA off SP2?

I'm using wep on sp2 with all the current hotfixs, security updates, etc
on a Toshiba laptop with absolutely no effort. Can use WZconfig & card
utilities from three diff cards and all works fine. Have to use wep here
because wifi netcams on the lan aren't capable of wpa, let alone wpa2 and
routers are one or d`others. Two AP's,, one is 128bit open long, one is 128
bit closed(shared) short. Windows Zero is smart enuff to do roaming from
open ap to closed ap slick as can-be.
 
Yes, but I'd like to be able to NOT use WEP or WAP and it seems that SP2
forecs me to do so. I don't have the "rights" to reconfigure the "open"
network I use. So I'd like to NOT use WEP or WAP.

I have SP2 installed on Dozens of laptops and SP2 has not forced me to
use WEP or WAP at all. I can connect to open networks just fine.

Maybe if you published your settings on your wireless setup on the
laptop, we might be able to see what you need to change.
 
Here, properties on the windows wireless network ssid has the encryption
method auto chosen and a drop down box that says enabled or disabled,,, your
choice. Also there's a check box on the ssid GUI that says something like
Use windows to configure my wireless network.. You can uncheck that and not
use windows zero config and use the wifi card configuration utility
instead,

Windows doesn't force me to use anything, maybe you need to start up as
administrator so you can change things, i dunno - good luck.
 
I reverted back to Win98 as I never got either an Orinoco or a NetGear card
to see the network I was guessing it was an WPA/WEP issue.

I enables/disabled/ etc WirelessZero, tweaked and uninstalled the cards,
etc. The cards searched but never found the network.

Strange.

But either card works swell once again under Win98. Oh well, a mystery.

winXP Services ,,, DHCP started ? also look at what it requires
I'd guess you have one or more services that is not started.
