The only way to have C: be Windows XP is with a clean install. Then you
will install drivers and programs from installation media and restore
data from backups.

If you don't mind that C: is storage and D: (or whatever) is XP, then
just make sure you can see all hidden files and delete everything on C:
except for the XP boot files:

Boot.ini
NTLDR
Ntdetect.com

Malke

you could clean install like malke said.

or It really depends where the win 98 files/directoy is located.
if in different partiton or same partition.

This article refers to Win 2000 andd 98 BUT would be very simlar for win xp!!
should be able to adapt to your saituation!!

Why said:

1)Are you not getting a choice of Win '98 or XP at startup/boot? Going
straight to '98?
You should be able to push the Up or Down arrow at the boot screen, then
press Enter when the one you want is highlighted.
2)If you can only get into Win '98, you'll have to rt.clk. your boot.ini
file and clk. Properties. [Boot.ini is hidden, under Drive C:] Uncheck the
Read Only checkbox on the Properties sheet.(Bottom) Clk. OK or Apply. Open
boot.ini ; you'll see something like (plus other lines in dual boot) this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Set the timeout= to greater than 0. (30 is default, 0 means NO choice)
This # is # of seconds to make an OS choice.
SAVE the file. Reboot; you should have time to make your choice(XP Home or
Pro).

3)Once in XP, hold the Windows symbol Key and push the pause/Break key.
Clk.Advanced Tab, the Settings button for Startup and Recovery.
Your default Operating System shows at the top. Click the arrow on the
right of it, highlight/click XP. Ok,OK your way out . Reboot to test.
