I used to go to run programs and type something that
would allow me to edit the programs that started up and
then appeared in the lower right hand side of the
computer screen. Any ideas what I used to type in? I
think it is also used for a secure rebot.

Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the Startup tab.

Before disabling a startup item make sure that you fully understand
the purpose of a startup item, how and why it was put into the
startup, and the consequences (if any) of removing it.

Here is a checklist site that will help you to identify the startup
items: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm

Good luck
