I noticed the other day that when I went to uninstall an application
that I no longer needed that I was unable to uninstall it. All the
programs are listed, but it does not give any options to uninstall any
of the listed programs. Does anyone know why this could happen and how
I can fix it? I am using Windows XP Pro.

Hi R.H.,

Thanks for posting!

Thanks for Road Runner's suggestion.

The uninstall application list actually stores under the following registry
node:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Somehow, the application may have already be removed manually from Windows
Explorer.
Then, the reference in the registry key may not work.

Thus, we may need to manually remove the related node under that Uninstall
node.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved.
Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1. Type regedit from Start > Run.
2. Find the above node.
3. Expand the Uninstall node.
4. You will find many items under it.
5. Find the node you want to remove.
6. Right click it and remove it.

Hope this helps.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any further concerns or
questions regarding the issue.

Hi Judi,

Would you please describe your problem in more detail?

Have you ever tried to use regedit?

What do you mean that the node is not there?

Can you expand the node in the left pane to the Uninstall node?

If possible, please make a screen capture and attached here.

I am not sure how to explain in more detail. I mean I have only one
item in the Remove Programs application that has the remove button. I
will attach a jpeg though I am not exactly sure how kosher that is in a
news group. If I offend anyone by doing so, please excuse my ignorance.

I have put two screen captures in the one jpg file; one shows what it
should be and the other has no remove button. I do believe I know what
is happening though I can't be 100% sure. I installed service pack 2
after most of these programs were installed. Now, I believe that it is
this that has made it impossible to remove them. I believe I will have
to reinstall my operating system making sure to install Windows XP SP2
prior to installing any programs.

Sorry, but the news server would not allow an attachment to go through.
I can send it directly to you if you are still interested.

Roger

Hi R.H.

You may send these two screen captures to me at jefffqiu at microsoft dot
com

I will check it for you.
