Remove multiple workbooks

My file test.xls opens as test.xls:1 and :2 and :3. All workbooks appear to be the same, but I only want one of them. I can hide or unhide them; how do I get rid of two of them? How did I manage to get these extra two in the first place? I have Excel2000.
