I have chosen not to install Outlook Express or Windows
Messenger on my XP Pro system.

Even though these are not installed c:\program
files\messenger\msmsg.exe keeps trying to access the
internet.

The messenger service is also disabled.

Does anybody know what this is and why it keeps running?

Greetings,

If you just removed Windows Messenger from the Add/Remove Windows Components window, all it
did was 'hide' the program, it's still there.

I assume since you know it's trying to access the Internet, that you're using some type of
firewall -- more then likely Norton Internet Security. Norton added a new "instant messaging
scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003 (which you may have separately or with Norton
Internet Security), which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior. To stop it,
open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
