Hi

I have just purchased a new desktop running Windows XP
Home Edition and now want to install the XP which came
with my desktop on my laptop which currently runs ME.

Would appreciate advice on best way to proceed.

You need to BUY another copy of XP. You can find XP Home for $80-$100 if you
look. What you are trying to do is illegal.

What you are asking for is help on committing Software Piracy.
And on a Microsoft-hosted newsgroup.

The rule is one copy of Windows (or one license) for each
computer. There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule
that's been in effect for *every* version of Windows; the only
thing new with XP is that there's now an enforcement mechanism.

Over and above that rule, if your desktop came with Windows XP,
it's an OEM version. OEM version's have an additional
restriction; they are permanently tied to the first computer they
are installed on. You couldn't put your OEM edition on your
laptop even if you first removed it from your desktop.

Which means the licence is OEM and tied forever to that computer. Not to
mention the fact that it's most likely BIOS locked.

Sorry, no can do. See above. If it's not BIOS locked, then it's a violation
of the EULA to install Windows - and note I said "Windows" and not "XP" - on
more than one system.

Sure. Go to your favourite software store, pick up the green box containing
the full version of Home, take it to the cash desk, hand over your credit or
debit card (or cash) bring it home and install.

Bullshit! It is not in any way, shape, or form, illegal! It would simply be breaking an agreement, which could ensue a civil suit.

Hey Ted stick it in your EAR.

Thanks Ted, that's what I expected. Have a nice life, what's left of it.

That copy of XP you have on the desktop machine is licensed only for one
machine, and as it came preinstalled 'OEM' may not even be transferred.
You would need to buy a second, upgrade, copy if you want XP on the
laptop. (the concession of a desktop *plus* a laptop applies only to
Office, not Windows, and only to retail, not OEM copies at that)
