To everybody that is networking and uses shared maps and drives:

REMOVE THE KB885250 SECURITY UPDATE !!

Why ?

Cause is responsible for SERIOUS SHARING PROBLEMS !!!

On client computer with the KB885220 installed ALL KIND OF PROBLEMS
ARE COMMING ABOUT TOWARDS SHARING:

- Not being able to write in shared maps is reported
- Clients don't see all the contents of a shred drive or map.
Suddenly you simply don't see some file that are on the shared drives !!!

THIS IS SERIOUS AND FOR REAL.

MICROSOFT IS ACTING LIKE A REAL JURK HERE !!

THE KB885250 IS FEW MONTHS OLD AND THEY HAVEN'T FIXED IT !!!
It WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A SECURITY UPDATE BUT IT ALSO IS MESSING UP
YOURE SHARING OF NETWORK MAPS AND DRIVES IN A WORKGROUP
ENVIRONMENT !!!

I CALLED MICROSOFT ABOUT THE SHARING PROBLEMS AND THEY
WOULDN'T HELP ME. I HAD TO PAY FIRST !! REALLY ABSURD !!!

SO MICROSOFT'S POLICIE IS NOT PAY PER INCIDENT BUT PAY PER BUG THAT
MICROSOFT MAKES !!!

DON'T LAUGH, THIS IS SERIOUS !

So people sorry for the capitals but this one is really ridiculus.
I was having sharing problems and couldn't find anything wrong.
I finally had spended many many hours on this and decide to call Microsft.

They said: Youre having OEM version, so if you want our support, first pay !!

Ridiculous !

Guys this is Gates, the multi-multi-multi miljonair.

Not even capable of running a bussiness as it seems.

Let people PAY. PAY and PAY again !!!

Sorry but I've had it with Microsoft.

Now you all are warned, so I hope it helps people.

By the way, the problem was solved with the help of Chuck,
many thanks to him.

Please Microsoft do I really have to switch off my auto-update feature, cause
you guys are messing up my WINDOWS-XP-PRO ??????

Antoine,

One of the problems with KB885250 is that it's so inconsistent. It doesn't
affect any large quantity of the population, and there's no way to predict who
it will affect at any time.

But it is a critical update, and fixes a security exposure that is quite real.
You just found out about it a bit later than most folks who were negatively
affected.

It's good that you have discovered your problem, but please don't rant and look
like a jerk.

See this update from Microsoft:
<http://support.microsoft.com/?id=895900>, which mentions an additional Hotfix
that you can get, free of charge (in Microsoft speak "In special cases, charges
that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft
Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your
problem.").

Funny...You can't even spell *JERK*, even though you are one!

(FWIW, I don't give any credence to "warnings" from babbling idiots).

Bobby

Is was just mentioning it as I warning.

The KB895900 has nothing to do with this situation.

The problem I talked about are concerning:

Genenral Simple File and Printer Sharing with WINDOWS-XP in a workgroup.

I should have metioned that in the warning, I forgot, sorry.

I'm not talking about problems using mixed platforms.

I had to remove the KB885250 and there is still no fix for it.

Installing the KB885250 immediately caused problems.

I'm sure it's not just a small commitity affected. All my compters except
one, were affected.

The all followed the standard auto-update procedure except the one working.

So I think the problem is much bigger as you think.

But some people are just not noticing it, or only shre printers at home.

If you share a map directly then there is no problem with that map either.
One level goes ok, but the next levels are the problem.

I'm sure the problem will finally come clear to many people.

The problem is also, you don't notice it when you have just make a new share.
They all looks fine at first. But after a while, suddenly the files are
missing.

I removed the KB885250 from all my computers now, and suddenly THE COMPLETE
network is working fine.

But I'll stay with the security hole is should fix, that not fixed anymore.

But that seems to be not a big threat too.

Just caal icrosft again tommorow and see if they would like the help me now,
knowing all this. Sure I'm not gonna pay for it.

Antoine.

If I have the problm I also searched the forum. If I was reading the message
I placed now, I would be greatly appreciate it and was helped in minutes
instead of months.....
