I attempted an upgrade to windows xp from my present
operating system of windows 98 and the upgrade failed
with critical errors. Now when I turn on my computer
both operating systems show up as boot options that I
have to catch in time to request the 98 option or the xp
option will try to open with the same critical error each
time making it necessary to restart my computer an select
the 98 option. Is there a way to completely remove the
partial set up of windows xp so 98 will be the only
operating system on my computer?

Boot to a Windows 98 Startup disk, then from the a:> prompt issue the
command "sys c:"

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig
Then go to the Boot.ini Tab and click on Check All Boot Paths. If you
receive a warning about a duplicate path: Do you want to remove, choose
yes.

Or...

Right click the My Computer icon/Properties/Advanced/Startup and
Recovery/Settings/System Startup/Edit.

You should see a file named boot.ini in the root folder
of your C drive.
Edit the file to something like below...

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=C:\
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

Notice the "default" line.
Make sure yours says C:\ and you'll boot to Win98

You can change the timeout value to any number of seconds
to give you more time at the menu when it comes up.
A timeout of "0" should boot u directly to Win98.
