I sometimes needed to connect to travel salesman's pc's when they are in the
field or home. What is the best and cheapest (if not free) way of doing
this? Sometimes they don't know their internet ip address or may be behind a
corporate firewall.

Thanks

Use WinVNC in reverse mode. This implies that you run
VNC in listening mode on your own machine, that you
have a tunnel through your own firewall for port 5500 and
that you have a domain name that resolves to your external
IP address. All of this is free.
