Once logged onto the ISP, I frequently receive a system
shutdown warning dialog box. In the box, it says that the
shut down was initiated by NT Authority\System. It also
goes on to say that Remote Procedure Call was terminated
unexpectedly.

What is causing this and what needs to be done to correct
and prevent further prompts?

The system is infected with the w32.blaster.worm:

More info about the worm:

If you are having trouble staying up long enough to get the patch and
removal tool: When the shutdown prompt appears, go to Start> Run and type
shutdown -a This will abort the shutdown process.

A removal tool that addresses many of the viruses and worms currently
circulating on a large scale basis, including the various blaster variants,
is called Stinger and is available from McAfee:

.

Don't forget to turn on XP's firewall! Otherwise,
you'll just get reinfected.
