remote procedure call in startup

On the msconfig list of services, is "remote procedure call" supposed to be
listed twice? During runtime there are two identical listings, except one is
running, the other is stopped. I cannot disable the inactive one because it
is an "essential service." If it is not supposed to be there it could be my
long-sought-after boot error source; how can I remove it?

Also, I bought my computer from a professional recycler who installed XP
home with a valid OEM product key (sticker etc.) but supplied me no restore
cd. I know I can't use someone else's install cd to reinstall windows xp but
would I be able to use one just to run a system file check (sfc.exe) or the
recovery console?
