If i am connecting remotely to an xp machine using remote
desktop from a windows ME machine, what printer driver do
i need to install on the xp machine in order to print to
the ME machine's printer? Do I need to install the xp
print driver on the xp machine or the me driver on the xp
machine? Thank you in advance.

You need the XP driver.
Remote Desktop redirects the ports--very different from win 9.x peer-to-peer
printing.

can the printer on the xp machine be redirected to a
printer connected by USB on the ME machine?

Ah - that's a tougher question!

Sometimes.

On the client machine, go to properties of the printer, ports tab. See what
the name of the port used is. Among the possible choices are: USBxxx
(001,001, etc) and DOT4.

In my experience USBxxx redirect just fine. You can install the printer on
the host machine as though locally connected--you can even say LPT1--doesn't
matter. After installing, just delete the created printer, but tell it NOT
to delete the files used by that printer.

If the port is DOT4, read here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q302361

If you choose to make the registry change noted in this article, remember
that rebooting the client machine after the change is necessary for it to
take effect.

I've had both positive and negative responses from folks who've tried this
workaround--i.e. it does work for some, and apparently does not for
others--no pattern I can discern.

Here's what I would do:

If the user connects, and the printer isn't redirected, check the system
event log at the host end for messages about a missing driver.

If you don't see such messages, then the port isn't being redirected, and I
would try the registry change in the article about DOT4 printers.

I'd also try Epson's support mechanisms to see if they have any information
about this issue.

So--my thinking is that if the port is redirected automatically, you should
see event log messages at the host about the missing driver. If you don't
see those, then the port isn't being redirected, so the registry change is
the thing to try next.

If you make the registry change, reboot, and still see nothing at the host
end, I don't have any good ideas about what to try next.

Bill,
Thank you very much for your time and effort that
was put into answering my questions. I have learned a
good deal. Thanks again.

Brian

Best of luck--and do let us know whether the epson port is redirected, and
what effort it took--you probably aren't the last who will wish to try this.

You should always go with a LPT port.
Remotte desktop has the ability to
automatically redirect LPT based
printers.
No fuss... No mess...

Good luck
