Please tell us what your *end* goal is - to share files remotely or to
control someone else's computer remotely?

We need to know what versions of XP are involved - Home or Pro - and the
Service Pack levels also.

Both machines are XP pro sp2

I want to be able to leave my home laptop on and then be able to access
remotely from other loactions with no one pressing buttons in the home and
then do:-

access files and update them
Share these files
be able to print to the office machine

OK, from the description in your first post it sounds like you are doing
Remote Assistance and not Remote Desktop.

See these links about getting started with Remote Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteintro.mspx
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/wxprmdtp.htm

You can also do this with third-party software such as UltraVNC (free)
or pcAnywhere (commercial).
