Remote Desktop Connection over the internet

I have a home office with a desktop computer running XP Pro. I also have a laptop computer also running XP Pro. When working at home both my desktop computer and laptop connect to the internet through a Linksys wireless router. The desktop is directly connected to the router with an Ethernet cable, and the laptop has a wireless connection through Centrino (Dell 600M)

When working at home I am easily able to connect my laptop to my Desktop using Remote Desktop Connection. It works great. However, I am not able to make the same connection when I am at another location and connected through the internet

What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank

Scott, I would try forwarding tcp port 3389 on your router to the internal
IP of your desktop. When you're away from home, use Remote Desktop
Connection to connect to the external IP your router gets from your ISP.

To test that this will work, after you have forwarded the correct port, at
home try to RD in to your external IP and see if the router correct forwards
the packets to your desktop.

This test isn't reliable. Routers differ in their behavior when you attempt
access to the external IP from inside the router.

(that said, if the test works, GOOD!)

If you can, try dialling out with an analog modem and doing the same
test--this'll be reliable.

Actually, you can use this port scan internet client:
http://www.firewalls.com/freescan.asp

which will check to see if the Terminal Services port is open and
listening for connections. Plus it is good to check how effective
your firewall/security is.. :)

This is one of the few that actually checks TCP 3389 - most don't
check that one yet...

Maybe we can get Steve Gibson to discover some horrific flaw in port
3380......naw--that'd be too much!
