I have a XP Pro computer setup with Remote Desktop turned on and I have
the router pointing port 5900 to this computer. When I try connecting
to the computer at 214.58.45.489:5900 it can't connect to the XP Pro
computer. Does anyone know where I can find instructions on how to
connect to this computer.

Thanks,
Craig

ps. the above ip address was just an example

Is the account being used for Remote Desktop secured with a password ?
Unsecured accounts cannot be used for RD sessions. Another issue can
be Firewall software which needs RD allowances set. Also, the IP address
you listed has an invalid 4th octet (489).

The account does have a password. I was watching the firewall security
and the log doesn't contain an entry when I try connecting so am
assuming I'm not even reaching the computer. When I'm connecting to a
Remote Desktop Connection it asks for a Computer name. I've tried the
IP Address but its not working, it looks like it wants the name of the
computer but even if I type in the name its not going to know where its
located. How do I tell RD where the computer is?

Thanks,
Craig

Port 5900 is a WinVNC port. The default port for Remote Desktop is 3389.

One thing is to know is the type the network connection of
both the Guest and Host PCs. Are they on the same LAN ?
or is this a type of RD like from a home PC on broadband to
another PC, perhaps on a company Domain ?
IP Addresses should work as long as they aren't non-routed
such as 192.168.x.x. If that's the case you'll need a VPN
connection to the destination network before starting RD. (if
it's a Server/Domain topography).

Thanks I have it working now. I reconfigured the router to point
traffic from port 3389 to 192.168.0.100 and allow my home ip address
access to the office computer.
