In messenger, requests for remote assistance are sent and
seen in the messenger dialogue box of the remote
computer, but when that user accepts the invitation to
offer remote assistance, his acceptance shows in his
dialogue box, but nothing else happens beyond that on
either computer. I've tried it with the firewall off on
both computers as well with the same result.

Look in knowledgebase, and Microsoft downloads (search = remote desktop).
There is a patch that is supposed to fix that. If you do not have SP2,
upgrade, it has the patch built in.
Also, you may want to try this first, make sure that both routers are not
running NAT. If they are, turn one of the routers protocal off and try again.

I had this problem and I had SP2 installed through Windows Update.
I found the solution in another post: Download the entire 266MB SP2 update
file and reinstall SP2 from the file.
It worked for me.
