Hi,

Can anyone point me to where I can find detailed step-by-step set up for how
to access another computer (e.g. a home computer) from Internet when I was
away?

I understand VPN might be the solution but for some reasons, my previous
tries were not successful and it seems to be very slow.

The home PC is connected to a wireless router using LAN cable and with DSL
Internet connection.

Many thanks.

Is the home PC running XP Pro? If it is then Remote Desktop is on option.

If its running XP Home then look at UltraVNC with its encryption plug-in and
video driver for XP.

Personally I run Remote Desktop through a SSH tunnel for added security.

Another way access a home LAN using SSH and Remote Desktop and/or
UltraVNC...

SSL-Explorer also provides a VPN function and you can run either Remote
Desktop or UltraVNC through the tunnel.

Hi,

Many thanks for your kind tips.

I will read them all, and in answering your question, yes - both run XP Pro
with all updates and service packs.

One quick question though, which method is considered to be the fastest in
terms of transferring files?

The main purpose is to get the files from the home PC (which is a file
library) when I was on the road.

Many thanks and will look into those solutions.

The SSL-Explorer VPN is good for that. You can easily access shares on
multiple PCs through the tunnel. An added plus is you only need a Java
enabled browser on the remote PC to access your home PC and/or LAN. You can
also run Remote Desktop or VNC through the tunnel. I have never done VNC,
but Remote Desktop works very well.

Read the "Quick Start Guide" and the "Reference Manual" particularly the end
of the latter. Both are very good.

You need to forward/open TCP Port 443 through any firewall/router that you
have at home to the static private LAN IP of the PC running the SSL-Explorer
server. Use a strong password.
