Remember that Office users use the keyboard.

The changes to menus, etc, in the past few versions of Office, in particular,
Word seem to forget the Office users are office users and, therefore, use the
keyboard a lot. The new menus and other functions seem to forget this - they
require users to use the mouse.
I personally am a very fast typist; I knew a number of the old keyboard
shortcuts. Now, I must use the mouse to change style and all sorts of other
activities which should be keyboard-able.

AFAIK, all the "old" keyboard shortcuts still work in Word 2003.

....for example, Ctrl+Shift+S activates the Style box. Type the first few
letters of a style, push the down arrow to select it, and press Enter. You
can create style "aliases" as well, for even faster style selection.

Ctrl+D brings up the Font dialog.

Lots of shortcuts still work as they have for the past decade or so. Plus,
just about anything that's not already assigned to a keystroke, you can
customize and assign to one.
