I tried to reinstall windows xp to get rid of remnants of
a virus I had. It installed fine and I can use the
computer just fine. . . only I guess I answered the
question wrong about partitioning because I ended up with
the old windows xp and now the new windows xp as choices
when I boot up. In trying to fix that, I got a part way
through another setup so Windows xp setup is a third
choice. I tried to go to the bootcfg and edit that to
get rid of the two I don't want but it asked me questions
I didn't know the answer to (don't remember what they
were- something about a name for the os or
something???). Now my boot choices are Yes, blank, ?,
the one I want, and one I want to delete. Before I mess
it up more, can anyone tell me how to delete these
unwanted choices?

Diane, rt click MyComputer>select Properties>Advanced>Startup and
Recovery-Settings. In the "Default
Operating System" Box make sure that you have selected your recent XP
reinstall. Then you can change
the "Time to display list of operating systems" value to 2 instead of
30. After, you can delete the
old Windows Folder on the first XP .

Thank you. That got me to having the right one default
on start up and I also edited the boot to get rid of the
other choices. It all looks good now. . . but I know
that somewhere on this computer is the old first version
of the operating system including the virus I had. . .
don't I need to delete that or repartition something?

Diane, you can delete the old Windows Folder. It should be called
C:\Windows and maybe your new
Windows Folder is called Winnt or Windows2 something like that.
