I just reformatted my hard drive and have reinstalled Windows XP. Before
installing all of my other software, I would like the answer to this
question: Should I restart after each install that requests a restart or
should I wait and restart after installing all the software? I am guessing
that I should restart after each request to avoid registry problems.

Hi Donnie,

I get asked this question alot at work and generally I will tell my
clients that if you are just installing applications and NOT software for
specific hardware devices then I would just wait and restart after I finish
the application installations. The only exception that I have found is when
installing multiple Microsoft Office versions onto the same PC such as,
Office 97 and Office 2003, then I usually will reboot after each install.
Basically, I think it is just more personal preference then anything else and
what makes you feel the most comfortable when installing applications is what
you should continue doing.

no its not requaired to restart the computer everytime
there are 2 reasons y restarts are requested at the end of instalation
1) if the same install engine is used again on the nxt software
instalation .. it might not start up stating that 'the last instalation
was not completed successfully'
2) restart is needed to refresh the registry with the entries that were
put in with the instalation of the new software.

so the answer to your question is .. if u r not using the program u
installed right away.. u dont need to restart .. install all your
programs one after the other without restarting and then in the end
just restart the computer once.. that should do.

The safe answer is yes. An application install may add other things like
DCOM, MMC, modify such as dotnet, etc. This takes reboot for all to work.
Hardware drivers usually take a reboot for it to work.
When in doubt, reboot. Won't hurt anything if not required.
