I have two PCs in my home that I'm wanting to network together. PC #1 currently has an XP Home Edition Upgrade Version on it. PC #2 currently has Windows ME on it. I'm wanting to upgrade PC #1 to XP Professional, and then use my existing XP Home Upgrade on PC #2. Is this possible? What steps do I take in doing this? My biggest concern is that I have both OS's properly activated and NOT HAVE the XP Home Edition activated on both machines (since this is illegal).

Thanks,
Dean

Once xp is loaded and registered on a computer then that computer
is it,one comp.,one xp installation.Leave xp where its at,install new edition
elsewhere,xp will/would detect a new machine,then upon registering it,youd
say its already registered to other machine.

I know that you can install a version of XP on a different PC. For instance, if you have one PC and load XP Home on it, then purchase a new PC, you can remove XP Home from the first PC and put it on the second PC, so long as it is only on one computer at a time.

I am in the exact same dilemma as Dean. PLEASE HELP! The way that a Microsoft rep recommended me doing it was to Uninstall the XP Home first from PC #1, then install it onto PC #2, then upgrade PC #1 to XP Pro. However, the MS rep said that this would harm nothing. But documentation on their own website says otherwise for programs that have been added/removed/modified. When confronting him about this, he recommended "Advanced" help (meaning you have to pay). I'm hoping there's someone out there who has done this sort of thing already before and knows the steps needed to do it

I need it done this way because I need PC #1 to be where I control the network using XP Pro. It would be much more work to just load XP Pro on PC #2 and then try to "switch" all the other applications on both PCs.

Thanks Andrew and Bob. Like Bob, I also contacted the Basic Microsoft help desk (FREE ONE), and they just told me that I could definitely do it but that I'd need to call the 24 hour MS Activation number to go through the details of how I was to proceed and in what order. They couldn't help me with that. I called the number they gave me and it's one of those voice activated numbers that I couldn't ever speak to anyone. No help at all

Also, like Bob, I really need PC #1 (the one XP Home on it now) to be the one with XP Pro on it later because it is my wife and I's machine and has a lot of business applications used to run a home based business. We also want to use the networking capabilities of XP Pro to limit the times that the second PC (my teenagers PC) can actually get on the Internet and some other Internet features and adminstrative capabilities. So, while I was at it, I was hoping that I could simply take that XP Home edition and put it on their computer so that I wasn't wasting my money

PLEASE SOMEONE HAS HAD TO HAVE DONE THIS:) PLEASE:)

Dean:
Go ahead and make the change on your PC's. Then, when you
go to reactivate the old xp, there will be an 800 number
to call (Microsoft) and they will give you a new
activation number after you tell them what you are doing
and why.

Good luck...
Carole

Greetings --

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:
