I need to reinstall my system on a new bigger (well really faster)
hard drive. I have already registered my copy of XP Professional,
Office, etc with MS. Can I just reinstall everything and reuse the
copies or do I have call MS first and tell them..

Thanks

Use the START button? Then you need CSFastRunII...
A new kind of application launcher integrated in the taskbar!

Don't worry you can install them without any issues. You will need to
activate after installing them.
:)

Just reinstall. You can uninstall/reinstall program and windows all you
want. You may need to activate again, especially if you format the drive,
but that's it.

Why reinstall at all? You can copy the entire old drive
partition to your new drive. Western Digital drives come
with Data Lifeguard Diagnostics that can set up the new
drive and do the copy. Or you can buy other software such
as V-com's Partition Commander or Copy Commander or
Symantec's equivalent - I forget the exact name. Might be
Partition Magic.

I've done this twice recently, using the WD copy. Worked
well for me. No reinstalls, preserve all your settings.

Unless there is more to this than you've posted, there's no need to
reinstall, I'd use Drive Image, Partition Magic or something similar to
simply move the contents of the old hard drive to the new hard drive,
keeping all of your installed software and data files intact.

However, in any case, if you do start from scratch, you will have to
reactivate, but it should be automatic, over-the-web and hassle-free.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and
activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. Nor is there ever a
charge. If it's been more than 120 days since you last activated
that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to activate via
the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you might have to
make a 5 minute phone call.

You will have to 'activate' (not register) again if you format, but on
substantially the same hardware that is a trivial matter. Just changing
hard drive will not be enough to make the system look 'different' on its
own. But see my page www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm and the hint in
Format Hard drive. In any case if it is over 120 days since you last
activated it will go through on the net again anyway, however much
hardware you have changed. I suggest waiting a day or so for things to
settle, then get on the net and use
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows

Or consider using a third party program to copy the present partition
exactly onto the new disk, then swap them over. For that I use BootIT
NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30 day full functional
trial)
