Have just reinstalled XP.

I had all my software ready to reinstall, drivers etc, and when it
eventually booted up after an hour, the desktop was unchanged from before
and all the clutter was still there.

Where did I go wrong?

Did you boot from the CD? Or did you start setup from withing Windows
select the option to perform a new installation, or an upgrade? If the
latter, you'll see just what you're seeing.

Don't try to start the installation from within Windows.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

I thought I'd installed from the CD but I didn't have any option other than
to install windows, so perhaps I hadn't?

On the second attempt its asked for the administrator password, which I have
no idea of?

My HD is partitioned into C D and E with a back up and a recovery partition
which I don't want to touch.

This assumes I have a blank freshly partitioned disk - I don't.

What assumes you have a blank disk? A clean install does not assume
that. Start your install and install on the partition where you want
Windows. The other partitions won't be touched. If this is still too
confusing, consider having a professional do the work for you. You are
making this way harder than it really is.

The Windows XP CD will give you the option of deleteing partitions. If you
want to install to the C partition, delete it, redreate it, format it as
NTFS, and then you will have a fresh partition to install to.
