I need to reinstall XP using my upgrade CD. Unfortunately I threw out my
Windows 98 CD. When I instert the upgrade CD it ask for the 98 disk -
although I DO have to product key numbers for Win98.

Any ideas how I do a clean install?

Find any Windows CD and buy it. An old W98, even W95 CD
will do. And don't throw it away too.

You can't without a qualifying product. You may be able to purchase 98 for
a bargain basement price on Ebay but without a disk to show proof at the
proper time during installation, you cannot install the upgrade version of
XP.

Just copy the CD from someone else. If you still have your official MS license
and key that should be kosha (sp?).

Now you've learned something... Never throw out anything..

Get a copy of Win98 cd from somebody else. As long as you still have the cd
key (to prove it's legal), that'll be okay.

If you don't mind being illegal... then just get a copy from anywhere.

Win98, Win98se, WinXP Home (full), Win2k all work. I don't think Win95
works. I know Win3 doesn't.

Check with your friends. Or the local newspapers. A friendly local
computer store? Put an ad in the local bargin paper offering $5 for an old
copy of Win98. Ebay etc.

If you can get one from your friends, it shouldn't cost you much to get
another legit copy. Nobody wants Win98 anymore and are almost at the point
of throwing them out, like you did.

I don't think there is anyway to trick XP into installing anyway... I know
you could do that with some earlier versions of Windows. And even DOS.

Windows 95 will work in the installation he describes, a clean install. In
other words, he could use a Windows 95 CD at the point in setup where it
asks for qualifying media. However, you can't upgrade to XP over Windows
95.

Kosher.

I believe, even if he has his license, it would still be a violation of the
EULA to copy someone else's disk.

No. As long as he still has the license, the copy is irrelevant. The files
are the same.

It's the license that's important.

This would simply fall under "replacement media" situation. As long as he
has the license, he has a valid right to those files.

The eula is talking about giving a copy to someone who doesn't have a
license. Not somebody who already has a license, and therefor has a legal
right to use those files.

As far as I know, yes. When you are asked the question during setup, you
would insert disk one in the floppy drive and direct setup to that drive.

Thank You :)

Either get another Win98 CD, or buy a full version of WinXP.
Whatever possessed you to discard the product that made your Upgrade
license valid?

Michael,
Thanks for the guidance. Would a win98 start up disk work in lieu of the CD?
If not I guess I will have to find an old copy for 98 from someone.
Thanks again for the quick response.

No, a start up disk will not work. But you can use any Windows disk yours or
anyone else since you still have an unused Product Key.

Whatever possessed so many people to throw away that card that says, in
large friendly letters' Do Not Lose this number'?

Bruce,
Yes I shot myself in the foot but I was in the clearing out mode and did not
think I would still need the Win98 disk. I quess to do a clean install I will
need the Win98 disk.

Thanks for the help.
Joe

Alex,
At least I have the numbers just not the disk - that will teach me to be a
bit more careful in what I dispose of.

<Sigh!> I know, I know...., it was a rhetorical question, really.

Michael,
I found a MS Win98 boot disk and tried reinstalling XP last night. After
I deleted the existing partition the install appeared to format the new
partition - I had two partitions (one 8 MB and one 25 GB - a mistake during
the first upgrade). The install process did not request the 98 CD but did
format the partition - took about 30 minutes. Then took another 30 minutes
to install XP.

How do I know if it made a clean install and not just a reinstall?

Thanks,
Joe

Click Start>All Programs. If your previously installed applications are still
listed there, you did not do a clean install.
