I'm looking into buying a Pro upgrade from a private party. They say it was
installed onto a computer and the product key was used. Can this product key
be re-used on my computer or should I get a brand new upgrade?

As long as they provide you with everything that came in the package and
no longer use it, you may use it.

Hi

If it was an OEM version, then no, it can't used on your PC. Best idea is
purchase a new XP CD for yourself.

Don't take the risk. If they're continuing to have that product key used
and validated then you may run into problems down the track. Get a new
upgrade.

If the person you are buying it from has it completely UNINSTALLED from his
system then yes he can sell it to you and you can reuse the product
key............but you will need to activate by phone during the activation
process and explain.

So it really is a matter of trust...........did he really uninstall it???

OEM versions are not upgrade versions, which is what the OP is
considering buying and, yes, if it is removed from the first machine, it
can be used on another.

False. You're sounding like Carey now.

According to him, the notebook he installed the software on was dropped and
broken and no longer functions. So, I guess that means that the software
would be no good because he was not able to uninstall it before the computer
was dropped?

Not necessarily. It it's been over 90 days since it was last activated, then
activation over the internet should work normally. Phone activation will be
required only if it's been fewer than 90 days.

No, that means that you can buy it and not have any problems. Just make
sure you get the original COA, box, CD, etc.
