Can I re-install XP Pro using the original disk without the process deleting
the applications and document files on the hard drive? Will I get that
option with the re-install choice? Any help is appreciated...

Thanks

A Repair Install should do just what you want. However, you should
always have your data backed up first because Stuff Happens.

Thanks for your quick response.

I'm working with an older T30 Thinkpad that I have had for several years.
When I tried the repair install it asks me for my administrator password. I
don't believe that I set one initially-however, the system says that I did.
I have never been asked for it before in performing updates or adding
applications. Since I can't get to the user settings at this point, is there
another way to access the password in order to do the repair?

If you have a retail or OEM installation CD, not a recovery CD, then a
repair install should keep programs and data intact. However things can go
wrong, so make sure you have a full and complete backup - something you
should have all the time.

That's not how you get into the repair install. You pressed R, that takes
you to the recovery console, which is not what you want. Go past that first
R. Read the information in the link for how to do a repair install.

Did you try pressing enter with no password? Can you still boot into the old
version of Windows? Boot up and change the administrator password to be
blank. Failing that you can download a program to remove the administrator
password here:

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

One word of caution. If you have used EFS (encryption) resetting a password
outside of Windows may cause you to lose access to encrypted files. Backup
your hard drive first. Accessing the registry outside of Windows may cause
unforeseen problems.

Rock is right. If you are trying to do a repair install you were at the
wrong screen.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Any and all additional advice and guidance

You're welcome. So how did it go?

Still working on it. I'm close. The instructions were great, but the
re-install stops and I get a message indicating that there is a problem with
the administrator password. Before it quits, i get a error message:
"lsass.exe-Sytem error. An invalid perameter was passed to a service or
function. " I have not been able to find that error message yet.

When I hit "ok", it restarts..the error message comes back and it stops
again...and it just loops through that cycle.

Any suggestions or guidance would be appreciated.

Sorry I don't have any guidance to add at this point, but some questions.
How are you trying to do the "reinstall"? When, exactly, in the process
does this happen? What is this message about the Administrator password and
when does that happen?

Probably not going to be able to repair install that, then. If you have a
PalmOS PDA, I suggest using GNU Keyring for your password generation and
encrypted mobile password storage needs.

I hope you have a recent backup of what you need off that system: You're
gonna have to go fresh.
