When the hard drive in my (rhymes with "hell"), PC developed a fault the
manufacturer's contractor replaced it. Unfortunately the technician
installed XP Home and not XP Pro on the new hard drive which was on the
original hard drive. I didn't notice the error until a few days later and I
now want to install XP Pro from the disc supplied at the time of purchase. I
understand that Service Pack 2 may (will?), cause problems with the
reinstallation of XP Pro. A detailed (and I mean detailed because I'm a
computer novice), walk-through of what I should do would be greatly
appreciated.

If it has been relative short time since technician installed XP Home, take
back to repair shop and "Demand" that they put XP Pro back on your computer!!
Did you get new copy for XP Home CD with COA and product key.

Most OEMs put recovery files on separate partition on hard drive. If they
put "home" on your computer they have destroyed your backup ability with
original installation. You probably can't do this: "want to install XP Pro
from the disc supplied at the time of purchase".

Double check with Dell tech support. Free online support.

XP Pro was the original operating system? Call the contractor and have them
fix their mistake - for free.

If you originally paid for Pro, then call your "service" to come back
and do the job correctly.

Thank you for your advice (and all that were of the same opinion). It really
is so silly of me not to insist that Dell rectifies their mistake especially
as I have paid for Next Day On-site Support. It must be down to my British
sense of not wanting to make a fuss! But, are you aware that if you contact
Dell Support with a technical problem they have you removing and reseating
components in an attempt to identify problems even if you haven't any
knowledge of tinkering about inside a PC case - scary or what?

Why don't you ask that technician to correct the issue?
