reinstalling xp h/e

i think i need to re-install xp as puter is very slow and some things such as disk cleanup wont function. i know i need to back up everything important but then do i need to just put in the restore disk and let it go or do i need to format the drive first, or? system restore only goes back 1 month which doesnt help

Without knowing the computer model, all anyone can offer is a "best guess",
but I have yet to find a restore disk that DOESN'T format the drive for you.
It should format, then install it to the same as it was when new.
